On The Surface

Synopsis

A young black woman goes swimming in the sea and reflects on her experience of raising a child in Iceland, a country that is nothing like home. As she enters the icy water, she relives her traumatic pregnancy. Being in nature and facing her fears helps her heal.

Biofilmography

Fan SISSOKO is a French-Malian artist and filmmaker based in Reykjavik with a background in design. Her work explores themes of migration, motherhood, and neurodiversity. She has worked in London for the Migration Museum, the Museum of London, the Science Gallery Dublin and the National Trust. Her short animated film “On the Surface” was awarded a grant and has been screened at international festivals.
