Um Dia Com Jerusa

Synopsis.

A Day with Jerusa” follows Silvia, a young, mediumic market researcher facing the hardships of underemployment while awaiting the result of a public exam, and Jerusa, a gracious 77-year-old lady, eyewitness to the daily life on Bixiga, a neighborhood filled with ancestral memories. On Jerusa’s birthday, while she waits for her family’s arrival, the encounter between her deepest memories and Silvia’s mediumship allows them to travel through time and realities common to their ancestry.

Viviane FERREIRA, director and screenwriter. She has directed and scripted several video clips and documentary shorts. In fiction, she directed the short films Mumbi7Cenas post Burkina (2010) and O dia de Jerusa (2014). Her most recent works are the feature film People : live to tell (2019), which she co-directed, and Um Dia Com Jerusa (2020), her directional debut on feature film. Master in audiovisual policies, by UNB, she is a lawyer, with a focus on entertainment law. FERREIRA is also president of the Brazilian Selection Commidee for the Oscar 2021.

Land of the brave

Synopsis.

During the dry and desolate Namibian winter a tough cop is hot on the heels of an ice-cold killer. Her investigations unravel when a ruthless reporter publishes dark secrets from her shady past. But the cop is determined to catch the killer, even if she has to break the law.

Tim HUEBSCHLE is a Namibian director and screenwriter. A focus on compelling stories rooted in the real world informed Tim’s filmmaking career since 2000, culminating in various acclaimed documentaries, short films and music videos. In 2009 he co-founded Collective Productions and began directing Namibian stories for the international market including a German docuseries, documentaries for a Chinese news channel and a feature-length crime thriller screened in Namibian cinemas and at global festivals.

Kunle AFOLAYAN is the son of the theatre and film director Ade Love. He majored in economics and started out working in a bank while doing some casual acting, before deciding to move into full-time filmmaking and taking a course at the New York Film Academy. Since 2005 he has been active in the Nigerian film industry. He has made several films including : The Figurine : Araromie (which won five major awards in the African Film Academy and was successful in Nigerian movie theaters) and Phone Swap (which premiered in France at the first edition of NollywoodWeek Paris and won the Public Choice Award in 2013).

Aloevera

Synopsis.

Two groups of people live in the same village, the Aloes and the Veras. There is a harsh rivalry between them that endures even with the children and each side is marked by their own trademark color. When the children of the town leaders’, Aloewin and Veraline, fall in love they must find a way to bring the two communities together despite the animosity. The community later on become one as result of the Relationship between the two.

Peter SEDUFIA is a product of the National Film and Television Institute, Ghana with BFA degree in film directing. he has directed several short films with varied awards. He directed Master and 3 Maids comedy series and Keteke 2017 also being his directorial debut, which has received numerous screenings in film festivals across the world and has won awards in Africa’s oldest and biggest film festival – FESPACO 2019, etc. Sidechic Gang 2018, is his second feature length film, which has also won a number of awards. His 3rd feature length is Away Bus 2019, which got several nominations and won an award at the Ghana Movie Awards 2019.

Rift finfinnee

Synopsis.

The film Rift Finfinnee takes the viewer on a journey through the periphery of Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. In strictly composed images and a soundtrack that interweaves the original conversations in a complex way, the film takes the concrete geography, architecture and the every day life of individual agricultural and construction workers in the east of Addis Ababa (in Oromo: Finfinnee) as the starting point for an allegorical narrative about the becoming urban of African societies on the edge of civil war.

Daniel KÖTTER is an international filmmaker and music theater director. His works alternate between different media and institutional contexts and combine experimental film techniques with performative and documentary elements. They have been shown worldwide at numerous film and video art festivals, in galleries, theaters and concert halls. In 2017-20 he worked on the documentary film trilogy Hashti Tehran (2017) which won the special award of the German Short Film Award, Desert View (2018) and Rift Finfinnee (2020, the DEFA Award at DOK Leipzig) about urban peripheries in Tehran, Cairo and Addis Ababa.

Omar Blondin un révolté sénégalais

Synopsis. Omar Blondin Diop est un brillant intellectuel sénégalais ayant fait ses humanités en France. Amoureux de la culture française tout en abhorrant son histoire coloniale, il développe un militantisme révolutionnaire qui le mènera à une expulsion de France puis une mort tragique au Sénégal. Les raisons de sa mort sont encore floues, la version officielle du gouvernement sénégalais parle d’un suicide, alors que l’enchainement des évènements tend plutôt vers un assassinat.

Djeydi DJIGO, jeune réalisateur sénégalais, a fait ses études supérieures à Paris, dans le domaine de l’économie (Inseec Paris) mais aussi du cinéma (SAE Institute Paris). Réalisateur engagé, le « documentaire historique » est son genre de prédilection. Ainsi, son premier projet, alors qu’il est encore étudiant en Cinéma, s’intitule « Etoiles Noires ». Il signera un partenariat avec la fondation allemande « Rosa Luxemburg » qui va le financer. Depuis 3 ans, il travaille sur son premier long métrage documentaire, à propos de Omar Blondin Diop.

David N. BERNATCHEZ is a Quebec filmmaker and producer. As an anthropologist, he has investigated the Congolese music scene. He divides his time between filmmaking, academic research and musical performance. His images, performances and lectures had been presented in various contexts and countries.

Sammy BALOJI is a visual artist and photographer. As a visual atist, Baloji juxtaposes photographic realities, combining past and present, the real and the ideal, to illicit glaring cultural and historical tensions. Synopsis.

Days of Cannibalism is a contemporary documentary Western which takes place against the backdrop of a newly emerging China-Africa relationship. The film is set in a remote rural region in Southern Africa, a frontier space in which the laws of society are in a state of flux. The arrival of new settlers – economic migrants from China – has upset the balance of power. Old laws and old gods are being called into question.

Teboho Edkins est né aux Etats-Unis en 1980. Il a étudié les Beaux-Arts à l’Université du Cap, suivit par une résidence de deux ans au Fresnoy – studio national des arts contemporains en France. Cursus complété par un programme de formation à la réalisation au sein de la DFFB de Berlin. C’est dans le cadre de cette école qu’il a réalisé «Gangster Project» (2011), son cinquième documentaire.

Bouddha en Afrique / Buddha in Africa

Synopsis.

The film follows the story of Enock Alu, a Malawian orphan from a rural village growing up between the contrasting African culture and the strict discipline of the Confucian, Buddhist value of system of the Chinese. It explore the impact of the growing influence of Chinese culture in Malawi following increasing trade relations between China and Africa in the past decade.

Becoming black

Imagine that your parents are white but your skin colour is dark and they tell you that’s pure coincidence. This is what happened to a girl in East Berlin in the 1960s. Years before, a group of African men came to study in a village nearby. Here the East German woman Sigrid falls in love with Lucien from Togo and gets pregnant. But she is already married to Armin.

Ines JOHNSON-SPAIN studied Fine Arts and painting at University of Arts Berlin. She worked as a scenic painter and set designer for theatre and international film productions. Since 2002 she develops and realises her own documentary film projects. Her work focuses on intimate portraits that explore themes of identity and belonging. The autobiographical film Becoming Black is her first feature length films. Her films have been screened at prestigious international film festivals and in many galleries and exhibitions in the world.
